John + Pamela//Metropolitan Building Wedding

blog-036 This blog post has been a couple days in coming because there were just SO many pictures of this beautiful venue and couple to go through that I couldn't narrow it down!  More than grateful still doesn't describe the opportunity I had to photograph Pamela and John's wedding at the Metropolitan Building in New York City.  Pamela contacted me back in November about being her wedding photographer after finding some of my work on Brooklyn Bride's blog.  She wrote me an email telling me she loved my pictures, and was even more excited when she read about me and saw we shared a love for Chick-fil-a and Jesus.  Pamela really wanted a photographer to capture the beauty of the venue but even more so who understood the significance of what was taking place, i.e. two people entering into a covenant of marriage before God and loved ones.  She told me that and I couldn't have felt more connected to what she was saying.  I think that's the biggest privilege of my job- I get to be a part of this really special day that is one of God's greatest gifts to us.

About a month or so later I got email from a photographer in Brooklyn, Jamie Lefkowitz.  Jamie had found my name on Brooklyn Bride and contacted me about shooting together not knowing I lived in Athens, GA.  We talked and I told her about this wedding in Queens, and ironically she and her husband were married at the same Metropolitan Building.  Jamie also photographed the wedding with me and Carrie Jo and she did an awesome job.  It was so neat to see how one blog post could connect people!  Big thanks to both Jamie and Carrie Jo for some of the images here.blogg-017blogg-015blogg-004 blogg17blog-020

The Metropolitan Building is this AMAZING old building in the midst of an industrial area of Queens.  It is used for events and photo shoots, and is by far the most beautiful venue I have shot at.  The window light is beautiful and floods each floor of the building, and the antique furniture is awesome enough to make Anthropologie a fan.  Pamela and John were able to pick out furniture and any other items they wanted to use for their wedding from the amazing inventory.  Below is a picture of the room of chairs they had---- gahhhhhhhhhhh.....blog-017blogg-005

John bought one his favorite books, Pilgrim's Progress, for each of his groomsmen.  The best part was that he searched for old copies of it, and wrote a note to each groomsmen on the inside.  The books had so much character, and I was impressed that each one was carefully searched for and picked out.blog-119blogg-007 blog-024 blog-026 blog-048bloggg2 blog-056blog-032 blogg18blog-034 blog-043 blog-045blog-079 blog-046 blog-052 blog-055blogg16

Pamela and John's ceremony was what really stuck with me about the whole wedding.  A close friend and mentor from John's time at Princeton married them, and the ceremony was meaningful and beautiful.  They chose two hymns for everyone to sing, and it was during the first one that my eyes just flooded with tears.  It was the hymn "Come thou Fount," written in the 1700s and definitely one of my favorites.  There weren't any instruments playing but just everyone's voices filling up the room.  It was during the singing that I had this deep sense of God's presence and kindness in my life in a powerful way.  I felt like God had given me this couple and wedding and trip to New York with one of my closest friends as a way to remind me that he loved me and that all of this was a gift.  In a second there were a million thoughts in my head, including gratitude that God had given me a job that I love and that it was him that was bringing me to these places and getting to know these people.  I know this is a super spiritual way of looking at photographing a wedding, but it was for real.  I know the Lord had me their to remind me of his goodness towards me, especially for when I came back home to a life of diapers and dirty clothes and a seemingly endless lists of tasks to do.  I stood with Pamela after the ceremony before we started family pictures and she thanked me for being here to celebrate and document this day.  And I teared up again and had to tell her that this day was big for me too.

Pamela and John left the wedding in a vintage checkered taxi while guests waved goodbye with sparklers, which is a rare find in New York considering the state doesn't allow the sale of fireworks.  The sparklers had to bought in another state to be used there, which I thought was especially fun considering sparklers are a huge staple down south.  They rode off to start their honeymoon in Paris the next day, which seems like such a magical way to spend your honeymoon.  I am so so happy for you guys, so thankful you asked me to photograph your wedding, and so so grateful to God for the gifts that he gives us.  I hope this day serves as a reminder of God's kindness to both you two as a couple and to me for all the years to come...blogg-024blogg-023 blogg-022

Mr. + Mrs. King//Braves Country Wedding

blog-39 I have a particular LOVE for people who are genuine and incorporate their genuine interests into their wedding day.  I love when people show who they are and what they love because it feels right, not just trying to keep up with the latest trends.  So when I realized how much Lindsey and Tony loved baseball (more specifically, the Atlanta Braves) and found ways to bring in Braves details to their wedding I knew I had found some genuine and fun people.  And I was so impressed by all the little ways the Braves theme ran throughout the day! From the ring bearer baseball bowties to the Braves Jersey that guests signed, it was full of navy and red to make Bobby Cox proud.

These two are fun people.  I realized how much so when I started taking their pictures and saw how many different facial expressions Lindsey could give the camera and how Tony was up for anything.  And these two are people who love God and people- it was so clear to tell from their ceremony and reception.  It was really neat to see them pray together after seeing each other for the first time.  My awesome second shooter Steven and I left them alone for a few minutes but of course got a quick shot of them from the back of the chapel.  We are photo snipers.blog-12 blog-15 blog-18 blog-20

The whole bridal party was a really fun group, and the groomsmen were very much up for taking some bridesmaid type photos:) Love this.blog-22 blog-26

A family friend of Tony's owns this 1969 VW bug that they used to drive to the reception and take off for their honeymoon in.  I couldn't have been more excited to see this getaway car... this is the kind of car I would pick to drive off in! Or to just drive in general.  The bug was complete with luggage racks and old luggage, the only thing missing was a surfboard:)  If anyone is looking for a car to rent for their wedding and likes this, let me know and I can get you in touch with them!blog-30 blog-34king-3

Tony and Lindsey's reception was at Reid Barn in Cumming, and there couldn't have been a greener or more beautiful place for it.  Outside was decorated with lights and Braves corn hole for guests to play, and the food was a perfect southern meal of BBQ and sweet potato casserole and everything else that makes a guest excited for the reception.  Friends of the family help decorate the tables with old baseball trophies, vintage baseballs, tickets and candles and pictures of Lindsey and Tony playing on little league teams were attached to an old metal gate.  This was done so so well- I loved that they really made it their own!blog-38blog-41king-4blog-43blog-44blog-45blog-46blog-47blog-48

One last thought- Lindsey's grandmother had to be the one of the best grandmothers I've encountered at a wedding.  She had the moves to every song, including rap songs, and would give me the best facial expressions for pictures (clearly this runs in the family!).  I had to include one shot of her because her dancing made my day.

THANKS a million for including me in your big day-I felt honored to capture it!

What to wear for your engagement session

engagement set 4

You've just settled on a date for your engagement photo session and the next step is figuring out to what to wear, but to complicate matters you have to come up with an outfit that goes with your fiancé's without being too matchy matchy! Admittedly these are first world problems, but it is helpful to have an idea of how to pick out your outfits so that you feel great in them and have pictures that reflect that.  I've wanted to give a few words of advice on this topic for awhile and joined efforts with my talented wedding planner and designer friend Molly McKinley to write this post to help couples plan and pick out outfits that make you feel your best!

Be yourself,  just up a notch.

When thinking about what clothing to wear, think about what you might wear on a date night, or the outfit that you put on and know it just perfectly fits (not just in size but also your personality and style).  Most ladies know what it’s like to have someone else put on your makeup and think, “Ahhh! I would never wear that color lipstick!” or someone style their hair and make it a lot bigger than it usually looks.  Your engagement pictures should look like you on a REALLY great day.  So find something you love to wear and can coordinate well with your fiancé’s outfit.  Don’t feel the pressure to wear Toms or Converse (or make your fiance where them!) if that isn’t you.  My husband makes this really funny face when he has to wear a bowtie, and I imagine that if I asked him to wear one for pictures he would have a hard time being himself.  Find an outfit that you love and feel great in because it will help you feel more comfortable and you in front of the camera.  The better you feel, the more fabulous your pictures will turn out.

Molly's advice:

Plan ahead.

Peach, Dusty Blue, Ivory, Gold, Grey

Typical planner here. I have my moments where I'm out of sorts, it's true, but it makes life so much easier when you plan ahead and you're prepared. My advice is to pick EVERYTHING out and try it all on - including your accessories. A great statement necklace completely changes your outfit, and a fun watch or bracelet is necessary for those shots of just your hands. ;) Get your ring cleaned so it's shiny and perfect! Practice your make up, and wear a little more make up than you usually do (if you know what you're doing - otherwise, have a friend help you out). It helps your features stand out so much more in photographs. My favorite products that have proven themselves in pictures are Aveeno Bb creme, Benetint (lip and cheek stain), Lancome Hynose Mascara, and my eyebrow pencil from Mac. Oh, and please make sure that you wear under eye concealer - it's a life saver in photos! Making sure you're well prepped and prepared makes for a happier you on the day of your photos. You will enjoy the day more if you're not fixing your make up in the car or panicking over which earrings to wear.

Look for style help from your favorite store. A helpful tip a good friend of mine told me was to think about what clothing store windows you see at the mall and like.  For instance, when I walk by the GAP store front and see the black and white mixed with a pop of color I am in love.  Take note of how they coordinate the men and women's clothing in the display- typically one of the models is wearing a pattern and the other a solid, and accessories are added like a scarf or sunglasses or jacket, etc.  Other stores with awesome storefront inspiration are J. Crew, Banana Republic, Anthropologie, or even Target with their ads or displays that are genius!  It's also helpful to think about a store that captures your style as a couple best.  I say as a couple, but we all know that sometimes one person in the relationship has a different style than the other (or just doesn't care).  The point is that you think about what your style is, not what the hottest style on Pinterest is.  For photos that you can enjoy years down the road, go with what you love and know that it never goes out of style (well, sort of:).  Once you've picked a store, go check out their displays and see how they pair outfits together.

Molly's advice:

Check out your favorite blogs, too!

Lots of times, I get color inspiration for weddings from blogs about home and lifestyle! You can do the same with your engagement outfits. Remember the color wheel? These artists and bloggers take the color wheel and show you how it's done.

Here are my favorite spots, so you can get inspired:

Preppy Couple Engagement Outfits

A few more helpful tips:

In terms of what looks great in pictures, I think color can add a lot of life to a picture.  Accessories always add visual interest to an image, too.  I would stay away from clothes that can be clingy or that don't lay flat because as you move around your clothing can become not so flattering (I found this from personal experience!).  Also, have someone take a picture of you in an outfit (say on your phone or something) and look at it.  Sometimes we miss that that an empire waistline looks more like a maternity dress in pictures even though it felt great.  Horizontal stripes tend to make someone look wider, which if you are a skinny mini then no worries but if you're trying to minimize your top than I'd stay away from the beloved stripe.  Jackets or sweaters are great to bring along because you can put it on over a dress to mix it up or cover up your arms if you don't like them.  Also, know your body type and dress accordingly.  So many dresses today are made to show off a tiny waist and bigger hips, but that isn't my shape so any dresses that come together at the waist are not flattering on me.  I know to look for shift dresses and to wear great necklaces to draw attention away from my waist! Last word of advice, when in doubt about what to wear, bring a few outfits to your engagement session and show them to your photographer.  Chances are you like the style of your photographer so you can trust their judgement in the process.

Engagement shoot

In the end, if you love your outfit and rock it like it's the first day of school, your pictures will show your joy and confidence.  And if your fiancé doesn't feel like a clown or forced to be someone he isn't, he will smile and be a lot more comfortable in front of the camera.  So be yourselves on a really good (shower) day and work it like a model- or maybe just laugh a lot and have fun... your pictures will be great.
